Profession: Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach at Methodist University
Skate Gear: #derbydumb Still rocking a triple 8 helmet, 187 pads, and Ridell skates with poison wheels.
Teams You've Played For: Assault City Roller Derby (Syracuse, NY)
How did you get involved with roller derby?: A family friend of mine, Kelli, sent me a link to a news clip that ACRD had been a part of. I was just out of college, missing belonging to an athletic team for the first time in my life. I had never roller skated with the exception of the old plastic skates that strap onto your sneakers when I was a kid- and that didn't go all that well. I didn't know anyone and was scared as hell. It was the best thing I've done for myself in a while. I'm so glad I found derby.
How did you choose your derby name?: I was given the name Ted Bundy in my fresh meat class of murderers. Once I made the B team I was able to choose my own. By that time I was always covered in black and blue marks. I came up with Bruise Cruise, kind of a play on Booze Cruise as well, but it's mostly about the bruises. Everyone calls me Bruise.
Pre-Derby Sports Background: Lacrosse from 1996- present, played Club Lacrosse at SUNY Cortland. Also played soccer while growing up, got put in the goal because I had no control of the ball with my feet. Plus I could come out of the goal and take forwards out with my body- that was fun.
Off Skates Workouts: Since I've started skating I've dispised any cardio where I'm not on skates- I'm so slow! But I can handle the eliptical. Most of my non derby work outs are lacrosse related as well.
Best Fresh Meat Moment: Taking the sticker that said "Ted Bundy" off my helmet
Favorite Derby Moment: Probably traveling to Ohio with 3 other girls on my team... Laughing at everything Punky said- especially in traffic jams. "That lady was a teenager when she first got here..."
Likes: My dog, Jobin.
Dislikes: Mean people
Derby Heroes: Of course all of the big names- but I have a girl crush on Scald Eagle.
Pre-Bout Ritual: Usually eggs, spinach and whole wheat toast. No music, just some self talk and visualization while getting ready to play. Still can't shake the neves though until the first whistle.
Derby Wife/Spouse: None, single in the derby world
